Cedar Art Studios Thrones fundraiser a great success

First Friday’s women’s empowerment event at Cedar Art Studios was inspiring, filled with positive energy and generosity. The thrones, both collectively and individually, were a sight to see and behold. The donating artists, and organizing artists, Eva and Julie, raised about $1200 for Changing Woman Initiative – which is an impactful gift to this emerging non-profit. In addition, every throne found a home where it will continue to hold a safe space for self empowerment and personal narrative.

Cedar Art Studios Auction First Friday, March 3rd, 6-9pm

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Cedar Art Studios is hosting a special community event featuring thrones created by local artists. The thrones will be auctioned and the proceeds will benefit an emerging non-profit, Changing Woman Initiative. More information about this amazing organization can be found at  www.changingwomaninitiative.com

The throne symbolizes a safe space for self-empowerment and the event is a global celebration and a call for female empowerment and gender equality.

Swallow Sonata for the Open Studios Group Show

Thursday I dropped off my new painting, Swallow Sonata, at the Canyon Gallery in the Boulder Public Library.

I’ve had a 26” round table top sitting around the studio for years and I finally tackled it for my 2016 submission.  At first, I was a little timid about painting a “rondo” as they called those round paintings in the Renaissance.  I felt the round composition might need some circling subjects and, eventually, these swallows swirling toward Long’s Peak helped pull it all together.

The preview show will run from Sept. 9 through October 9.  The reception will be Friday, Sept 30 from 6 to 8 pm.

New work and new inspirations for the upcoming Open Studios, October, 2016

Our son is recently married to a lovely Italian woman and they are living in Italy — so we’ve been over there twice in the last year.  We’ve seen the beautiful cities of Genoa, Florence, Venice, Rome, and Naples. And I’ve never seen anything more gorgeous than the Tuscany countryside or the Mediterraneascent_to_sanctuarycropan coast.  It’s been absolutely wonderful to stay with and travel with our Italian relatives and I’m in love with that amazing country — both the culture and landscape combined with the incredible history and art and architecture have inspired me in many ways.

My photos and memories of our trips are prompting me to add new elements to some of my paintings:  towers, buildings, arches, windows, decoration, ceramics, — it’s all showing up in my new work and will be available at my studio the first two weekends in Oct.

Lucky’s Cafe exhibit

I just finished hanging a show at Lucky’s Cafe in north Boulder, a few blocks from my home and studio. They create inspired American cuisine showcasing Boulder’s locally grown foods and are open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch.  It’s a nice space and the lighting is exceptionally good.  The show will be up for the month of August.

I’ve titled the exhibition Natural Selections, Contemporary Painting Inspired by Nature and Design.

“Margaret Donharl is an artist who layers brilliant birds, flowers and landscape over symbol and pattern.  She paints on recycled, pre-framed doors — infusing her work with multiple layers of imagery while seeking to connect us with the beauty of our breathtaking world.  7 a.m., Lucky’s Cafe, 3980 Broadway, Boulder; free; 303-402-9403”
